Actualization of Botanical Garden at JKUAT on Course

The Chinese government has heightened its pledge to invest in the development of a Botanical Garden and the Sino-African Biodiversity Research Center at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), an initiative mooted two years ago. The garden which is a flagship project of the Vision 2030 development agenda will include construction and stocking of six laboratories, a research centre consisting of five gardens and hostels for both local and international scholars. Ksh 10M Canadian Research Grant for Malaria Control

Researchers at the Department of Zoology have received $ 113, 000 (close to Kshs.10 million) from the Government of Canada to support a promising research project aimed at combating malaria through the development of possible phytomedicines – anti-malarial drugs developed from targeted medicinal plants. The objective of the 18-month study is to extract active anti-malarial compounds from medicinal plants in Kenya and Nigeria that the researchers have already identified. A research scientist at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology has come up with what may be a solution to banana streak virus (BSV) found in Tissue Culture (TC) bananas. In her Masters research titled Evaluation of in vitro protocols for the elimination of banana streak virus in TC produced bananas, Ms. Grace Wacheke Mungai, a Biotechnologist at the Institute of Biotechnology Research (IBR) found out that the virus could be eliminated through chemotherapy by using ribavirin and salicylic acid chemicals. Joint Admissions Board Admits 53,010 Candidates to Public Universities

The Joint Admissions Board (JAB) will admit a total of 53,010 candidates who sat for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examination in 2012 to the country’s public universities and constituent colleges. According to JAB, candidates who scored a minimum aggregate of B of 61 points and above will be admitted to the public universities and their constituent colleges.
